Course Introduction

Families of color, especially those whose children are underperforming in schools, are frequently invisible in school settings. Far too many feel disenfranchised and undervalued by school personnel. Consequently, they are hesitant to work with educators. It cannot be denied that family engagement is an essential ingredient for student success. In this workshop, we explore barriers to their involvement and engagement, along with recommendations and resources for strengthening partnership with these families.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will better understand why families of color may be less involved in school settings than White families. They will gain practical approaches and resources to reduce and eliminate barriers to collaborating with families of color.
