Course Introduction

Social emotional learning is being incorporated in the curriculum in many schools in state of Ohio as well as in schools across the nation. Educators may find it challenging to teach both social emotional learning and academic skills to their students given the relatively limited time devoted to teacher directed instruction in the classroom. Integrating the teaching of social emotional concepts and academic skills may be an efficient way of achieving positive academic and social outcomes for students. With regards to academic skills, researchers have demonstrated that there is a relationship between literacy and social emotional learning outcomes in children (Curby et al., 2015; Tan & Dobbs-Oates, 2013). The purpose of this workshop is to present instructional practices that incorporate teaching social emotional learning with teaching literacy skills to preK to 3rd grade students. In this workshop, participants will learn about various teaching practices, methods, and techniques for integrating teaching social emotional learning with literacy to help all young children develop to their full potential within these areas. Participants will have the opportunity to apply incorporating social emotional learning with literacy activities.
