Course Introduction

Students with dyslexia make up 5-15% of the school-age population but education has been slow to response to the needs of these individuals. Fortunately, Ohio is heeding the call. Ohio House Bill 436, dubbed “The Dyslexia Bill,” was signed into law in January 2021. Among the mandates in the new law is one that is significant to Ohio teachers: Each district or school will provide multi-sensory structured literacy program professional development for teachers in evidence-based dyslexia screening and intervention practices. Course content includes an examination of the codes in HB436 relevant to dyslexia screening and intervention, a foundation in the understanding of what dyslexia is, an in-depth examination of structured literacy, a working knowledge of dyslexia screening tools, and an introduction to and practice with Structured Literacy®, the recommended approach considered essential for teaching students with dyslexia.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how essential elements of the federal law and the recent state law that relate to dyslexia instruction/intervention and screening
  • Identify the classic characteristics of dyslexia
  • Recognize the fundamental principles of Structured Literacy instruction
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the components of Structured Literacy instruction
  • Recognize the essential components of an effective screening tool
  • Implement an effective screening tool

This course will have asynchronous and synchronous components.
