Course Introduction

In this course, students will explore leveled reading expectations for the elementary grades. Through that exploration, we will understand how leveled texts increase in complexity by carefully examining the ten characteristics of leveled texts. Once we understand this process, we will examine student writing through the lens of these text characteristics and consider how we can use leveled texts as mentors for student writing in a variety of ways.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the ten characteristics used to level texts.
  • Examine student writing through the lens of differentiated reading expectations.
  • Consider ways to increase writing expectations in the elementary classroom.
