Course Introduction

If you call the profession of K-12 education home, you are bound to run across an angry parent at some point in your career. Parents, and rightfully so, are protective of their children. If they perceive an injustice toward their child, their parental instincts are likely to manifest quickly into anger. In these moments, you, as a K-12 teacher or school leader, often bear the brunt of this frustration and are left to find an amenable path forward. It is common to feel isolated, unprepared, and stressed which ultimately may impact your love of the job. In this course, participants will learn how to effectively diffuse angry parents in addition to staving off stressors that accompany these negative situations. Through the use of actual scenarios from practicing K-12 teachers and school leaders, participants will grapple with negative parent interactions, use best practices to troubleshoot appropriate next steps, and ultimately structure effective resolutions to stressful situations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • understand effective approaches to diffuse angry parents,
  • feel less stressed as professionals, and
  • apply common tricks of the trade to prevent negative interactions from occurring.
