Course Introduction

Volumes of reports and studies reveal that racism and anti-Blackness, especially toward Black boys, run rampant in our nation and the majority of school districts. Overrepresentation among this student group in stigmatized areas of special education (e.g., behavioral, and emotional disorders, cognitive delays, ADHD) and subjective disciplinary decisions by educators and resource officers seriously compromises the educational experiences and trajectory of these students. Both areas contribute to a myriad of outcomes such as the school-to-prison-pipeline, school dropout, underachievement, achievement gaps, miseducation, and underemployment. In this series of workshops/presentations, racism and anti-Blackness are interrogated. The invited speakers have extensive experiences with this student group, the topics, and intervention and prevention.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn from speakers, videos, readings, and resources how to stop/prevent racial discrimination in special education and discipline. They will learn how to promote equity and diversity to stop the profiling, policing, misplacement, and miseducation of Black and other students of color.
